How to Measure Wide Feet for Shoes
To measure wide feet, you need both length and width. Length tells you the shoe size to start from; width helps decide whether standard, wide or extra-wide fit is more suitable.
Simple width measurement method
Stand upright with your weight on the foot you are measuring. Wrap a soft measuring tape around the widest part of your foot, usually around the ball of the foot.
Measure both feet and use the larger width. Feet can differ slightly, and shoes need to fit the larger foot comfortably.
How to use the measurement
Compare your width with the brand’s own chart where available. If there is no width chart, use fit symptoms as a second check.
- Length feels right but sides are tight: try wide fit.
- Wide fit is still tight: look for extra wide or a roomier brand.
- Heel slips but sides are tight: the shoe shape may not suit your foot.
Common questions
Can I measure wide feet at home?
Yes. A soft measuring tape around the widest part of the foot gives a useful width measurement.
Should I measure foot width sitting or standing?
Standing is better because your foot spreads under body weight.
