Shoe Width Codes Explained
Shoe width codes describe how much room a shoe has across the foot. They are separate from length size, so a UK 8 wide is still a UK 8 in length.
Common width codes
Width codes vary by brand and country, but D is often used for standard men’s width, B for standard women’s width, and EE or 2E for wide in many US-style systems.
- D: often standard for men, wide for women in some systems.
- E / EE / 2E: commonly indicates wide or wider-than-standard.
- 4E: commonly used for extra-wide men’s shoes.
- W / XW: plain-language labels for wide and extra wide.
Why codes are not universal
A width code is only useful when you know the brand’s system. Two shoes with the same width code can still feel different because the last, toe box and upper material are different.
