Fit
Should Shoes Be a Size Bigger?
Sizing up can help in some situations, but it can also create heel slip, rubbing and instability if the real problem is width or shoe shape.
When sizing up can make sense
Sizing up is most useful when your toes touch the front, your longest foot is between sizes, or the style is known to run short.
- Running shoes often need a little extra toe room.
- Kids shoes need growth room, but not so much that the heel slips.
- Thick socks can justify extra space in boots.
When not to size up
If the shoe is long enough but tight across the sides, a wide fit is usually better than a larger length.
Common questions
Is half a size bigger enough?
Often, yes. A half size can add useful length without making the shoe feel much larger overall.
Can shoes that are too big cause rubbing?
Yes. Extra length can cause foot movement, heel slip and friction.
